EMILY’S STORY
I had intended to simply relax and to revel in the beauty and pleasures of Bali, when I visited last year. It was not be. For on the second day, when I was riding through the vast Balinese jungles of Ubud, my motorbike engine seized a few steps away from a small hut where I was instantly surrounded by spanners and tools trying to help me get moving again. However, the monsoon weather soon arrived and it began to rain so hard that we ran into the little hut for shelter – it was then I realised I had stumbled upon something extraordinary, beyond that seen by the usual tourist: a treasure trove where art and nature are seamlessly intertwined. It wasn’t just the lush landscapes or the vibrant culture that struck me—it was the artistry that breathed life into stone. Everywhere I turned as the lightening lit up the shadowy room, I saw stunning sculptures, intricate panels, and beautifully crafted stonework, each telling a story of ancient traditions and cultural richness. The eyes of the craftsmen working turned to me in curiosity and I realised that generations were at work here, from young to old.
The Balinese artisans had an innate ability to turn solid rock into breath-taking forms, and I knew instantly that this was something special. These weren’t just sculptures; they were expressions of serenity, elegance, and deep-rooted history and of skills handed down across the generations.

As the lighting flashed and the rain played its musical beat on the tin roof, I watched these skilled artisans work, shaping raw stone into intricate designs. I don’t know whether it was the work of the Gods of the island, or just the magic of the moment, but instantly felt a deep connection to their craft. I knew I had to bring this beauty back to the UK—so others could experience the profound serenity these works of art evoke. But that I wanted to not just work with the tourist items that they manufactured and that were stacked ready for despatch to retailers on the island and further afield, but with the clearly special pieces and display pieces that were visible sometimes peeping out from under protective covers. And I immediately realised the potential to use these remarkable skills to create the sort of works that my friends were having commissioned at great cost, in such as Italy and France.
It all happened so quickly, as if a path was being laid out in front of me. .Whether it was the strength of the relationship that was quickly forged, over ginger tea or later the strength of a little too much of the Balinese wine, but within a day or so, I had purchased many of their unique items and established plans for an ongoing partnership.
Over the following week, I think I only hit the beach once as I had to organise shipping and discuss my purchases with those I knew that would be interested in the UK. I quickly gained promises of sales, and Sculpting Serenity was born.
